Opening Day at The Zancudo Lodge November 28!

Opening day at The Zancudo Lodge only a month away!

Doors open at The Zancudo Lodge on November 28, 2024!

With opening day at the Zancudo Lodge less than a month away, we took a test run on our new custom 44′ Contender to start getting in peak season form.

As we arrived at the scene of the chaos, the yellowfin tuna weren’t jumping directly in the boat, but it felt like they may start at any moment. The horizon was popping with action as a combination of spinner dolphins, dive-bombing seabirds and scads of out-of-control yellowfin tunas attacked the ocean’s surface in search of a quick lunch. The screams of excitement from the captain and crew provided the soundtrack for the moment.

The nonstop popping of these hungry fish was like watching an industrial strength 1950’s style movie theater popcorn machine churning and launching golden kernels of popcorn into the air with a drooling crowd of hungry kids eagerly waiting to get their buckets filled. We were the kids, and the boat was our bucket. It was another great day of fishing in Southern Costa Rica!

A Dream Scenario – Yellowfin Tuna Chaos

This amazing scene last week reminded us how lucky we are to live in a place where Discovery Channel displays like this are common and the only question every day is “What amazing thing am I going to witness next?”.

As some of us started throwing poppers into the offshore chaos, we all sighed and tried to take in the moment as we realized it just doesn’t get better than this anywhere in the world.  “Fish ON” soon echoed multiple times through the air and we had four lines hooked up with another angler having his popper immediately smashed by an incoming Sashimi rocket.  It was a spectacular sight.

These are the kinds of scenarios we love to get our guests into and it’s one of the reasons we have such a strong repeat clientele. With our limit in tuna reached, we headed home only to be greeted by a pod of transient Orcas who seemed to be wondering how our captains always got to the tuna first.

Catching Costa Rica Tuna

An Orca Visits the Boat during a fishing trip

The Ultimate saltwater Fishing Destination

Costa Rica”s South Pacific Coast near the Panama border is world famous for anglers seeking a match-up with inshore and offshore heavyweights . 99% of anglers’ bucket list fishing species roam the waters here with blue, black and striped marlin, yellowfin tuna and dorado, and  the occasional shark-like Wahoo attacking the spreads.

Inshore fishing is equally as exciting with a cast of characters ranging from the legendary roosterfish to the bluefin and golden trevally, African pompano, Cubera snapper, black snook, grouper, and many more. The backdrop is something out of an old prehistoric dinosaur movie like “The land before time” where misty rainforest covered mountains jut sharply into the pristine waters of the Golfo Dulce. Because of the steep slope and extreme depth of the coastal mountains,  this area around the gulf is counted as one of only four tropical fjord systems in the world. The depth of the gulf approaches almost a kilometer in the center making this a true haven for aquatic creatures of all kinds including humpback whales and whale sharks.

The volcanic swiss-cheese like structure of the gulf provides a myriad of cracks and crevices for the legendary Cubera snapper and half a dozen other snapper species to call home. With no development or condos in sight,  you feel like you’re one of the last people left on Earth while overlooking  the primordial shores of a forgotten prehistoric jungle paradise that is absolutely teeming with fish.
