Costa Rica’s blue water blazes with red hot sailfish action offshore
Blazing bluewater Sailfish action in January at The Zancudo Lodge
If you like non-stop angling action, Southern Costa Rica is the place to be
If you enjoy bluewater fishing and releasing lots of amped-up sailfish, Southern Costa Rica has been delivering the goods since mid January. We’re experiencing one of the best sailfish bites in recent memory with anglers getting lots of shots at these bluewater ballerinas daily.
Costa Rica’s sailfish season (mid and South Pacific) starts in mid January and usually stays hot all the way through April and into May. So if you’re looking to get in on this once in a lifetime action we have space left in April and May of this year. If you want to learn even more about peak sailfish times in Costa Rica and how they move offshore, read this article on our blog about catching sailfish in Costa Rica.
Big tuna and dorado have also been bending rods as well with one couple boating a monster yellowfin tuna that weighed in at 185. Our fast custom contenders coupled with state-of-the-art Simrad radar can find and transport you to the tuna fast. If you haven’t experienced the thrill of running alongside superpods of spinner dolphins and getting into thick tuna, this is a fishing experience every angler should enjoy at least once. The Dorado bite has been off the hook as well with some very large individuals being taken (most released) and if you love dueling with dolphinfish this is yet another reason to join us in Costa Rica.
The main story inshore has been the Roosterfish, with lots of trophy sized individuals being released. If roosterfish are on your bucket list get here asap. Roosterfish in and around the Golfo Dulce average 10 to 15 pounds but we get trophy sized individuals to 40+ and 50+ regularly. They love live bait but have also been hitting poppers as of late. The Snapper scene has been on fire with lots of variety including of course big Cuberas, rock snapper, colorado snapper, yellowtail snapper and many others. The cavernous volcanic rock that composes the inshore structure creates the ultimate terrain for snappers and our region is home to over ten species of them.
Our talented chefs at the Resort’s Gamefisher restaurant are ready to cook your fresh catch just the way you like as you take in a magnificent sunset overlooking three miles of pristine beach directly in front of our lodge. Bask in our saltwater filtered pool with an ice cold cocktail and forget about the stress of city life for awhile – This region of Costa Rica has been described by National Geographic at “the most ecologically intense place on Earth”. Let the sounds of the jungle work their magic and relax.
At the moment we are enjoying a full lodge with repeat guests and new friends but we have openings in April and May and of course for 2025. When you’re not fishing you can enjoy a variety of day trips to see the abundant wildlife and some of Costa Rica’s most pristine rainforests.
We could write more about the awesome catches we’ve had this past January and early February but why don’t we just show you? Costa Rica fishing doesn’t get much better than at The Zancudo Lodge! Enjoy the photos and video below.
