This was truly a most tremendous sight. This melee was at least 1/2 mile wide and 1/2 mile in length. It was a massive feeding Frenzy. We saw hundreds of Tuna and only needed one. Cruising out of The Zancudo Lodge for a day of Costa Rica fishing is one of the most amazing experiences an angler can have in his or her lifetime. The private pier is located on the back side of the lodge and is situated on the entrance to the Rio Coto, a few minutes from the river mouth and is home to their fleet of high-end 32’ Contenders. The mangrove laden riverbanks are teeming with crocodiles and caiman (a safe distance away from the pier). When heading out for a day of fishing the sunrise will literally make you stop and gasp a couple of times. A myriad of aquatic birds like spoonbills, white ibis and tetradactyl-like frigates circling overhead add to the primordial jungle ambience.
If you are fishing the Osa Peninsula this is a must visit. The high-end rooms, restaurant and main resort building make you feel like you’re at a Ritz Carlton in the middle of the jungle with three miles of secluded beach right in front of you. The fact that there is a private pier with a fleet of 32′ Contenders with Yamaha 300s and top of the line gear and knowledgeable captains makes this a definite bucket list destination.
